A guide to breast uplift surgery

A breast uplift (mastopexy) is ideal if you are looking to reshape your breasts and remove sagging or excess skin. You can combine a breast lift with other breast enhancement surgeries, including augmentation (implants). However, which one you opt for is entirely up to you.

Read on to find out what a breast lift is, whether you’re a suitable candidate, and what happens during a breast uplift procedure.

What is a breast lift?

Breast lift surgery, also known as mastopexy, removes excess skin and ‘re-cones’ the breast to create a fuller-looking and lifted bust. You can combine other breast procedures alongside a breast lift, such as breast augmentation. However, this depends on your unique preferences and current situation.

Does a breast lift include implants?

Breast uplift surgery doesn’t include implants (breast augmentation). However, you can opt for breast uplift and implant surgery if you would like added volume and size enlargement.

A breast lift without implants can make your breasts appear fuller, however, it is not the same as a boob job. Breast uplift without implants is best if you simply want sagging skin removed to position the breasts and nipples higher, rejuvenating your breasts.

Who is a breast lift suitable for?

A breast uplift is the best option to fix sagging breasts with surgery. However, there are many reasons you may consider a breast lift. Below are indicators that you could benefit from breast uplift surgery:

  1. Sagging or drooping breastsYour skin loses elasticity as you age, which can cause sagging breasts. You may also have heavy breasts, which pull at the skin, making them droop prematurely. If you have large breasts, you may want to consider breast reduction surgery which uplifts the breast as well as reducing their size.
  2. You’re unhappy with the way you’re breasts sitBreast shape is often genetic, and even small breasts can droop. If your breasts are too low for your liking, breast lift surgery is an excellent option.
  3. Loss of shape or volume – Age, pregnancy, and breastfeeding are common reasons breasts lose their shape or volume. A breast lift procedure involves removing excess skin and reshaping the breasts for a firmer and a youthful-looking bust. Despite the breasts looking fuller, a breast lift is not the same as a boob job. Therefore, if you want to enlarge your breasts, you may be suitable to undergo a breast augmentation at the same time.
  4. Nipple points downwards and falls below the breast creaseDownward-pointing nipples are often a result of sagging breasts from age or breastfeeding. A breast uplift not only lifts and reshapes the breast, but it also repositions the nipple-areolar complex. This ensures your nipple no longer faces downward, further enhancing the breast uplift.
  5. Significant weight loss Including that achieved through medications such as Ozempic, Mounjaro, Wegovy, or other weight loss injections, can also lead to loss of breast volume and sagging. Following this type of weight loss, a breast lift may be recommended to restore the shape and lift of the breast, with or without implants.

What happens during breast lift surgery?

It’s essential to understand the steps of a breast lift procedure to ensure that a breast uplift surgery is right for you. Below is an overview of what to expect during breast lift surgery:

Consultation for breast lift surgery

Before any procedure, you’ll have a consultation with experienced breast surgeon, Adam Critchley, who will assess your breasts. The initial consultation helps gain an understanding of what you want and what is possible from the surgery.

Adam will also go through your medical history and eligibility for the surgery. For example, smoking impedes recovery time. So, you will need to stop smoking cigarettes for a minimum of eight weeks and vaping for at least four weeks before the surgery.

Preparation for surgery

On the day of the procedure, Dr. Critchley uses a special pen to mark the incisions for your uplift. The incisions are typically around the areola, along the breast crease, and vertically from the areola to the breast crease. The length of the breast crease scar depends on how much sagging skin Adam removes.

Surgery for breast uplift

You will undergo general anaesthesia, putting you to sleep during surgery. Our anaesthetist, Billy, will continue to monitor you during the procedure, which can last up to three hours. Billy, our anaesthetist also places ultrasound-guided nerve blocks to minimise post-operative pain.

During the procedure, Adam will use the marked incision lines on your breasts to remove excess skin and reshape the breast tissue. He will then insert breast implants if you are also having a breast augmentation. The procedure is finished by repositioning and resizing your nipple-areolar complex.

What is breast lift recovery time like?

Breast lift recovery time varies from person to person. It generally takes four to six weeks for the incisions to heal, but you can resume light, daily activities approximately two weeks post-surgery.

You mustn’t engage in any strenuous exercise, such as weight lifting, cardio, or swimming, for at least four to six weeks after your breast uplift. Doing so can cause bruising and swelling, and may irritate or reopen incisions. You can enhance recovery by following other best post-surgery practices.

How much does a breast uplift cost?

Breast uplift costs vary depending on the individual’s unique needs. However, we offer transparent guideline prices for breast surgery, with the initial consultation costing £200.

For a breast uplift without implants, we charge approximately £8,679, and for a breast lift with augmentation (implants), this will cost around £10,100.
