What causes extra breast tissue under the armpit?
Have you noticed any extra breast tissue under your armpits? You might find that it leads to a bulging effect over the top of your bra or clothing.
When this extra tissue develops, it can be quite alarming — but don’t worry. In most cases, the extra fat, skin, and tissue (axillary breast tissue) is simply down to weight gain or genetics.
Hormones can also play a role in the growth of axillary breast tissue, so you may find it increases during pregnancy or when you reach menopause.

How to get rid of extra breast tissue in the armpit
While axillary breast tissue and fat deposits under the armpit are very normal, many women feel uncomfortable about the appearance. If you’re feeling self-conscious about your underarms or experiencing chafing or discomfort, you might be wondering how to get rid of the extra tissue.
You may have heard of liposuction as a solution for armpit fat removal. However, while this takes away excess fat, it doesn’t tackle axillary breast tissue. It can also leave the skin around the affected area looking saggy.
At Adam Critchley, we take a different approach. Our axillary tissue removal procedure takes away the extra breast tissue and the excess skin. The result? A smoother underarm silhouette.
It can be a good idea to look at axillary breast tissue removal before and after photos to see what this surgery can achieve. We can provide more before-and-after examples during your consultation.
What happens during axillary breast tissue removal surgery?
When you book armpit breast tissue removal with Adam Critchley, you’ll be guided through the process from beginning to end.
It can be helpful to have a clear understanding of what the surgery itself will involve, and your surgeon Adam will be able to explain it in more depth during your consultation. However, here’s an overview so you know what to expect from the outset:
- Firstly, our anaesthetist Billy will put you under general anaesthetic so you’ll be asleep for the surgery.
- Your surgeon Adam will then make a precise incision beneath your armpit to reach the breast tissue.
- Adam will then remove the extra tissue and any excess skin before carefully sewing the incision back up.
- You’ll be taken to our comfortable ward, where you’ll be well looked after during the first stage of your armpit tissue removal recovery. An overnight stay is included in the cost of your surgery to allow you to rest and recuperate. Feel free to take a look at our prices for more information.
Often, axillary breast tissue removal is combined with another type of breast surgery. Many people pair their breast reduction or mastopexy with armpit tissue removal to ensure a smoother silhouette all along the bust and beneath the arms.

What to expect after your axillary tissue removal surgery
As with any type of breast surgery, it’s very natural to feel a little tender after having armpit breast tissue removed. You may experience some swelling — but rest assured, our team will be on hand to answer any questions, and you’ll have a check-up from Mr Critchley before being discharged home.
What is the recovery time for axillary breast tissue removal?
Much of your recovery time depends on your body and lifestyle, but you’ll generally need a few weeks of rest before returning to your usual activities. In particular, you’ll need to avoid lifting and exercising until you’re fully healed.
For the first week following surgery, we advise that each patient listens to their body, sleeping in the position that is most comfortable for you, your body will guide you. Adam will be able to offer more guidance on when you can resume other activities, such as gentle walks and returning to work. Adam and his team can also talk you through any pain management.

Your breast armpit fat removal questions answered
The overall cost of your axillary breast tissue removal really depends on whether you’re having it as a solo procedure or combining it with another form of breast surgery. As an initial figure, you’re probably looking at between £3,500 and £10,000.
For an accurate estimate, it’s best to speak with an experienced breast surgeon like Adam who can provide you with a bespoke quote following an in-person consultation.
In most cases, axillary breast tissue won’t grow back under your armpit following surgery. This is because we remove the excess tissue and any extra fat there permanently.
However, it’s important to note that considerable weight gain can lead to armpit fat developing in the future.
Scars post-surgery will initially be quite obvious with the arm raised, but with time the scars fade and they are largely hidden with the patient’s arms resting at their side. If you have any queries or concerns, please speak to Adam at your initial consultation appointment.
Although weight loss can reduce the amount of fat beneath your underarm, axillary breast tissue consists of glandular breast tissue rather than just fat. As such, it doesn’t usually go away with weight loss alone. This is where armpit fat and axillary tissue removal can be a great solution for getting a more toned appearance and boosting your body image.
