Breast Implant Removal

Verified Reviews and Testimonials

You may be considering breast implant removal for a range of reasons. Perhaps your perspective and body image have changed over time, and you feel your implants are no longer a feature you want.

If you’ve had breast augmentation and are now thinking of going implant-free, the team at Adam Critchley can help. Our Newcastle clinic provides a safe and welcoming space where you can undergo breast implant removal and get your confidence back.

Why undergo breast implant removal?

Most people who have breast implants removed do so for cosmetic reasons. They may no longer feel confident with their enlargement. As we age, the breast tissue around implants can change, sometimes creating a distorted shape due to sagging. This can lead some people with implants to want them removed — either to replace and reshape them or to reduce their breast size.

For some people, complications can arise after a breast enlargement — although this is rare, the best course of action is to remove the implants. If you feel discomfort or pain or an implant has ruptured, this can call for breast implant removal.

From the first consultation Mr Critchley made me feel at ease and comfortable in discussing surgery and reasons behind it. He explained everything in detail from start to finish which made me feel 100% confident I was making the right decision to have surgery. He is extremely friendly, professional and very knowledgeable. I am 6 days post op and I already feel so much better in myself. I would highly recommend Mr Critchley to anyone wanting to undergo surgery.

I was experiencing breast pain approximately two years after a breast augmentation and after meeting with two health professionals i still didn’t feel I was being listened to or reassured. I did my research and requested an appointment with Mr Critchley. He was extremely caring, he listened to my concerns and validated my feelings. He was thorough with his explanations and very understanding. He called me for a follow up appointment and was genuinely interested in how I’ve been managing the pain conservatively. If I need any further assistance in the future or if my symptoms change I would not hesitate to contact Mr Critchley again. Thank you.

I went to see Mr Critchley for some revision surgery after meeting him following a lump I had, which turned out to be a cyst on my breast. From the first time I met Mr Critchley I felt very at ease. I'd previously had breat surgery elsewhere and was unhappy with the results. Mr Critchley listened and asked me what I was unhappy with and what I was looking to change. Mr Critchley took the time to actually listen to me and talk me through all of the different options available. I never at any point felt pressured into surgery or making a decision. On the day or surgery he came to see me to explain in detail what was going to happen and reassured my husband who had many questions! Mr Critchley makes you feel very at ease and cared for, he also rung my husband aftery surgery to reassure him everything was ok which my husband was very impressed with and really appreciated. The aftercare Mr Critchley has provided has been outstanding, I can't thank him enough for the results, I'm coming up to 4 weeks post op and can't believe the change, it has been life changing.I can't recommend Mr Critchley enough and if anyone is looking to have surgery then Mr Critchley is the one to see.

From my initial consultation with Mr. Critchley I found him extremely professional, friendly and approachable. He is very personable and he put me at ease immediately at what is a very anxious time. Mr. Critchley explained with clarity every aspect of the procedure and gave me realistic expectations of what may be achieved. I was under no pressure or obligation to go ahead with the operation and was given time until my second consultation appointment to make my decision. Having contemplated the surgery for over 15 years I now had no doubt about proceeding under the care of Mr. Critchley.I am now three weeks post-op and although I do still have some swelling and bruising, the transformation is truly amazing! I know that this is going to change my life for the better.I have received excellent care from Mr. Critchley and all of his team at the Nuffield Hospital, Newcastle and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to anyone who is considering this type of procedure in the future. Many thanks !!

My experience with Mr Critchley has been nothing but amazing from start to finish. My initial consultation was very informative, he made me feel very at ease and was incredibly professional. On the day of my surgery he came to see me and explained everything that would be happening, again he made me feel more relaxed and assured me everything was going to be okay as I was very nervous. The surgery went amazingly and the results are more than what I could have wished for. Mr Critchley came to see me as soon as I woke up from surgery and again the following day to make sure everything was okay. He went over aftercare and arranged my follow up appointments. During my appointment with the nurse a week later he came to see me and examined my wounds and asked me how I was feeling. Then my two week appointment was with Mr Critchley where he examined me, answered all my questions and explained more aftercare to look after my scars. Overall, I could not recommend Mr Critchley enough, he is incredibly thorough, professional and good at what he does. He has truly changed my life for the better. Thank you so much!

What is breast implant removal?

While some women opt for breast enlargement using fat transfer from another part of their body, most go for silicone implants. These implants are inserted under your breast tissue to create a fuller bust.

But what happens if you want to remove these implants? ‘Explant’ surgery, or breast implant removal, can be combined with another surgery form.

  • Your explant surgery may be paired with breast implant revision or replacement at the end of the original implants’ lifespan.

  • Alternatively, if you are simply having your implants removed, you’ll usually need a breast lift to help reshape your breast tissue. This is because, once the implants have gone, there will be excess skin.

What happens during breast implant removal surgery?

As with any form of breast surgery, it’s important to have a clear understanding of the process before undergoing the procedure.

Preparing for breast implant removal

Your breast surgery journey will begin with a consultation. During your consultation, your surgeon Adam Critchley will assess your breasts and ensure removal is a suitable solution for you.

We ask that you stop smoking 4-8 weeks prior to your surgery and discuss any potential medication changes with your breast surgeon ahead of your procedure.

The night before your implant removal, we recommend showering well and avoiding any deodorant use or cosmetics around your chest and underarms to keep the area as clean as possible.

On the day of your surgery, you’ll be given an effective general anaesthetic so you are asleep during the whole procedure. You may also benefit from ultrasound-guided nerve blocks placed by the anaesthetist.

Implant removal surgery

During breast implant removal surgery, your practitioner will create an incision around your areola or along the breast crease, then remove the implant and any scar tissue. If you’re going implant-free with a breast lift (mastopexy), they will then move some of the breast tissue to create an aesthetic shape and stitch up the incisions.

The process usually takes between one and three hours.

What to expect after breast implant removal

Full breast implant removal recovery usually takes around six weeks. You may notice swelling, soreness, and tenderness for a couple of weeks after your surgery, along with changes to your nipple sensitivity. These are very normal, so don’t be alarmed.

Scarring is also natural, and it may appear prominent at first but will gradually fade over time. Take a look at our guide to breast surgery scars and recovery for more advice on reducing the appearance of scarring.

During your breast implant removal recovery phase, we recommend:

  • Avoiding any lifting, bending, or straining for two weeks — you may wish to take a couple of weeks off work.

  • Avoiding sexual intercourse for at least two weeks.

  • Wearing a surgical support bra for the first few days post-surgery and keeping your chest dry. You can then switch to a soft support bra for the remainder of your recovery.

  • Sleeping on your back until you feel healed.

How much does breast implant removal cost?

At Adam Critchley, breast implant removal costs an initial £200 for a consultation. The full price then depends on whether you are replacing your implants or require a breast lift (mastopexy) after removal. We can guide you through your options and the full costs during your consultation.

Our pricing includes an overnight stay in a private room along with anaesthetic, surgery costs, post-op medication, and follow-up procedures.
