What is breast asymmetry, and how can it be treated?

All breasts are different.  It’s completely normal for one breast to be slightly bigger than the other. Whether they’re your natural breasts or you’ve had breast augmentation in Newcastle, having different breast sizes (or asymmetry) is very common.

But what can you do if one breast is significantly larger than the other and it’s causing discomfort or affecting your body confidence? Let’s take a look at breast asymmetry treatment options so you can look and feel your best.

What causes breast asymmetry?

Breast asymmetry simply refers to having breasts that are of different shapes or sizes.

Breast asymmetry can occur for many reasons — including asymmetry in the torso itself. One of the main causes is hormonal fluctuations — particularly changes in hormone levels during puberty, menopause and pregnancy.

Other causes include physical trauma and breastfeeding.

Is breast asymmetry surgery necessary?

It’s worth noting that, for some people, breast asymmetry is simply a part of their anatomy and genetics. And providing you are happy with your breasts as they are, treatment isn’t necessary.

However, for many women, uneven breasts can cause distress, pain and low self-esteem, which can be relieved through surgery.

So, what are your breast asymmetry correction options?

Breast asymmetry surgery comes in a few main forms, involving one or more procedure:

  • Breast augmentation: Your surgeon might recommend breast augmentation to fix asymmetry — this involves adding implants to enlarge one breast (unilateral) or both breasts (bilateral) to create symmetry.
  • Breast reduction: You can also reduce the size of one breast so it is closer to the size of the other. In some cases, you might want to reduce both breasts.
  • A combination: Your breast surgeon may suggest enlarging one breast and reducing the size of the other so they are more even.
  • Breast lift: Your breast asymmetry surgery may also involve a breast lift to reduce any sagging. It can also be helpful if your surgeon needs to reposition your nipples to create a more symmetrical appearance.

What if you’ve already had breast implants?

Have you previously had breast augmentation? In some cases, implants can shift slightly, leading to asymmetry. In this situation, breast implant revision could be a good solution. This procedure involves removing your old implants and either replacing them with new ones and adjusting the placement or adjusting the tissue and skin of your natural breasts to create a more even shape.

Is breast asymmetry correction right for you?

If you’re considering surgery for your breast asymmetry, it’s important to make sure it’s the right decision for your body and wellbeing.

Generally, you’ll be considered a good candidate for the procedure if you:

  • Have one breast that is significantly larger or different in shape from the other and it’s affecting your body confidence and mental wellbeing.
  • Your aim is to improve the appearance of your breasts to help you feel more comfortable.
  • You have a realistic idea of the results. It can be helpful to look at breast asymmetry before and after photos so you have a clear idea of how they may look.
  • You have good overall health and maintain a fairly steady weight.
  • You don’t smoke or are willing to give up smoking at least 4-8 weeks before your surgery to support your post-operative recovery.

What are the benefits of breast asymmetry correction?

For those who do feel breast surgery for asymmetry is right for them, there are a few key benefits.

  • Improved self-esteem: If breast asymmetry is getting you down, surgery can help you feel more confident in your body shape. You may feel more empowered in your clothing choices, swimwear, and with your partner.
  • Better posture: When one breast is significantly larger than the other, it can lead to one side feeling heavier, and this can affect your posture. By balancing out your breast volume with breast asymmetry surgery, you may find your posture improves.
  • Improved comfort: In a similar way, breast asymmetry treatment can help you feel more comfortable by evening out weight distribution and lowering the risk of back, chest, or neck pain.
  • Bra and clothing options: Do you find it tricky to find a well-fitting bra? If one breast is a different cup size than the other, your bra options may be limited.

You might also find yourself sticking with clothes that cover your breast shape to avoid drawing attention to your breast asymmetry. Treatment can open up your wardrobe options so you can find clothes you love.
